Technical Chat : What Is Your Favourite Ergo Baby Carrier

    Author: Yangel
Subject: What Is Your Favourite Ergo Baby Carrier
Posted: 13/Sep/2011 at 09:08

When I was pregnant with Wolf, I searched high and low to find the perfect baby carrier. I’d heard from lots of parents that it just would depend on what the baby liked. My good friend tried 5 different carriers with her daughter until she finally found the perfect one so I expected our baby carrier journey to be a challenge.

When Wolf was just a few days old, we decided to try out our first carrier. We’d purchased the Moby wrap in black and after tying, wrapping and re-wrapping the fabric, we initially gave up. He just seemed so small and I was terrified that he’d stop breathing. I wore it around the house for about 10 minutes, constantly checking his neck to make sure it was aligned correctly and then finally decided to take it off. So for those first few weeks we stuck to the bassinet on our stroller. But I was determined to carry Wolf!

Now that he’s 3 months old, we’ve pretty much found what works for us and Wolf.

My favorite: The Ergo.

I love that Wolf can snuggle up against my chest and fall asleep, which he does most every time I put him in it. It’s perfect for long walks because the weight is distributed evenly and he’s shaded for the most part from the sun. I just make sure his little legs and feet are covered and we’re good to go! We love taking Wolf on hikes and The Ergo is perfect for that! The only downside to The Ergo is that he can’t face forward. When Wolf is awake, he wants to look out. I didn’t realize upon purchasing The Ergo that he wouldn’t be able to face forward and Wolf likes to see the world. I’m sure once he gets bigger and his head actually peeks out from above the carrier, he’ll love it. And I’m sure he’ll especially love when I can put him on my back!

Cheap baby carrier Ergo baby carrier sale Ergo baby backpack

In the HBase component of Powerset's product, Microsoft also acquired open-source code that is actively being redistributed back into the Apache Software Foundation's Hadoop project.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">The scenario of having open-source technology in a product is a first for Microsoft, which to date has had only proprietary technology in its software, said Robert Duffner, a senior director in Microsoft's Platform Strategy Group.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">[ Microsoft's relationship with open source sometimes has been adversarial, as when it sought royalties from open-source companies. ]
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">Letting the acquired technology exist as it is, and letting the former Powerset employees continue to contribute code to Hadoop, represents a shift in mindset and strategy at the company to be more friendly toward open-source technology and realize that "innovation occurs across a wide variety of technologies," he said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">In addition to the Powerset code, Microsoft also for the first time in 2008 began contributing other code to open-source projects. In July, Microsoft began providing code to a PHP project called ADOdb. PHP is an open-source, freely available scripting language that developers widely use for Web development.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">Duffner's group, under the direction of Microsoft Senior Director Sam Ramji, is driving this movement to not only accept open-source software as a technology with which Microsoft's software has to interoperate effectively, but also to see it as beneficial to both Microsoft's own business goals and the industry as a whole.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">Having long positioned Windows and other proprietary software against open source as "us versus them," Microsoft is now trying to convince customers that the two technologies are not mutually exclusive and in fact can even be complementary at times.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">Part of the duty of the Platform Strategy Group, formed a little over a year ago, is also to reverse the message of Microsoft's previous and infamous "Get the Facts" campaign, which aggressively tried to show customers the value proposition of deploying a Windows environment instead of Linux.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">This new attitude also is a far cry from the Microsoft of only a year-and-a-half ago, when CEO Steve Ballmer claimed that Linux violates 235 patents Microsoft holds and said the company was considering seeking patent royalties from open-source distributors.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">"It's been quite a while since we've heard very much saber-rattling [from Microsoft] on open source," said Jay Lyman, open-source analyst with The 451 Group. "It's indicative that there is true change going on over there."
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">However, even members of the Platform Strategy Group team admit that turning the entire Microsoft ship to accept this new attitude is no easy task, and it's a process that is still evolving across the company.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="1">"There are some groups within Microsoft [where] it's taking longer for the message to filter down," said Peter Galli, senior open-source community manager of the Platform Strategy Group.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">Microsoft hired Galli, a former journalist who covered both Microsoft and Linux, several months ago as a "change agent" to help spread the new open-source message across the company, Duffner said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">An example of how old habits die hard came just last week, when Microsoft's public relations team posted a case study on its PressPass Web site highlighting how a U.K. company called Speedy Hire expects to save $1.48 million in five years after switching from Linux to Windows. The interview, which Microsoft's public relations team pointed out to journalists through an e-mail campaign, had no apparent news value and seemed out of context, as the Speedy Hire case study was a year old.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">Blatant open-source bashing like this is what the Platform Strategy Group is trying to change, Galli said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">However, Microsoft still believes that running a Windows Server environment has a better total cost of ownership than a Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment, something that many customers still don't quite understand because some still believe open source means free of charge.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">This message is especially important during the current recession in the U.S., when many companies are looking to cut costs, Duffner said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">He stressed that Microsoft by no means wants to promote the use of open-source software to its customers, and still thinks its own software is superior. However, embracing open source is about giving customers and developers the chance to make their own decisions about which software to buy, and making sure both Microsoft and open-source software can be part of the same buying decision, Duffner said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">The 451 Group's Lyman concurred that Microsoft's interest in open source is "its own self-interest." "They want open source on Windows to be just as good as open source on Linux," he said.
<P =Article _extended="true" page="2">Lyman added that it "makes sense" for Microsoft to differentiate between attacking other vendors like Red Hat and attacking open source as an ideology, which is what the company has done in the past and which has proven to be a battle that it can't win.

News : Phones to be powered by speech?

    Author: admin
Subject: Phones to be powered by speech?
Posted: 10/Dec/2008 at 10:45

Mobile phones could one day be powered by your banter, if research being carried out by two US universities proves fruitful.

Tahir Cagin, a professor from the A&M University in Texas, together with a team from the University of Houston, discovered that the energy-harvesting capabilities of piezoelectric materials improve by around 100 per cent when working at a length scale of between 20 and 23 nanometres.

Cagin’s research of piezoelectricity at the nanoscale level is new, but piezoelectric materials were discovered well over 100 years ago. They're materials which produce electricity when they're compressed.

"Disturbances in the form of sound waves, such as pressure waves in gases, liquids and solids may be harvested for powering nano- and micro-devices of the future," Cagin told website Science Daily.

For example, a mobile phone equipped with a piezoelectric power source could mean that the handset would be charged by the sound waves created during a good long natter. These “disturbances” could also be used to power all sorts of other portable gadgets, including MP3 players, laptops and compact cameras.

Not that this is a new notion. Many watches are powered not by battery but by physical movement, using it to keep their springs wound. We'd be interested to hear about research carrying out this approach at the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) level.

It’s worth noting that the Automated Music Personality robot unveiled earlier this year relied on piezoelectricity, whilst a London nightclub already has a piezoelectric dancefloor powered by intoxicated revellers.

(<SPAN =>http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/20/amp_music_robot/)

(<SPAN =>http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/07/11/dancefloor_power/)

On the phone, Steve convinced him about having to check out this amazing new computer, which according to the Jobster was "insanely great" (or something like that). Jobs wanted him to distribute it and, after talking for a bit, Veit agreed to give it a try. To his surprise, it arrived the next day FedEx delivered a package C.O.D. for five hundred dollars.

It was the first Apple computer ever, the Apple I.

He gave the computer to Dave, one his best tech guys, who was surprised at its minuscule size compared to the usual computers at the time. After a while, Dave set up the computer but it didn't do anything, so Veit called "Apple."

"See! It works," Dave told me.

"What does it do?" I asked.

"Nothing! It needs a keyboard. I'll get one," Dave told me.

Dave came back with one of our SWTPC keyboards and wired it in after studying the schematic.

"Don't work," he told me. "Better call 'em."

So I called the number listed in the paperwork and asked for Steve.

"Which one?" the young man at the other end asked.

"The fast talker," I told him.

"Oh, Steve Jobs. Wait a minute."

Steve came on the line, and I told him the keyboard didn't work.

"What kind of keyboard did you use? Southwest? Nah, they won't work. I'll send a good one and some software tomorrow."

"Wait." I told him I didn't need it FedExed next day, I could wait. But too late, he was gone.

Veit's feature is full of personal insight on those times and, while there's always two sides to a story, I find it extremely amusing, specially his last remarks:

Lunch was served to the press and notables, and I was seated with Steve Wozniak’s parents. Introducing myself, I struck up a conversation with them and in the course of discussion I mentioned that people were often shaking their heads when I mentioned that I had refused Steve Jobs' offer of 10 percent of Apple for an investment of $10,000.

Mrs. Wozniak said, “Don’t feel bad, you were not the first person Jobs offered stock in the company for a small investment. When the boys needed printed circuit boards, Jobs offered an interest in the company to the man who did the boards. However they managed to pay for the boards and the man never got any stock. When Apple went public, Jobs would not give stock to several employees who made the Apple possible. My son gave them stock out of his allotment, or they would have never benefited from the long hours and devotion they put in to start the company. If you had given Jobs the money, he would have found a way to keep you from getting the stock."

I got to thinking about AV (anti virus) as well as backup, storage, exchange maintenance as well as a DRP (disaster recovery plan). I started looking at all the option’s like Symantec for backup and AV as well as AVG and CA… then I thought to myself why not open it up for discussion. So what are your view’s on this all.. should documents be kept on a server and accessed via the network? Should you use folder sync for the my documents or only use it on laptop’s. What do you think is a acceptable backup police and what media should people be using? Do you do a weekly monthly yearly backup and what should you use for each?
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Will be interesting to see what the responses are like.

News : Google launches video chat for Gmail

    Author: admin
Subject: Google launches video chat for Gmail
Posted: 14/Nov/2008 at 09:36

Google is rolling out video and voice capabilities for the chat function that is embedded in the Gmail interface. It's a bare-bones voice and video-conferencing service, but it's simple to install and use and is a very good addition to Gmail.

It's no Skype, though. Gmail Video and Voice, as it's called, can't connect to the plain phone network, as Skype's paid service can. And there are plenty of other optional features missing, like a voice call recorder.

I found a demo of voice and video quality on the service excellent, although to be fair I was connected from CNET's corporate network to someone at the Google campus. I do expect Gmail Video quality to be a bit more consistent than Skype, since unlike the point-to-point architecture of Skype, Gmail Video traffic all runs through Google servers. I expect that Google has the bandwidth and server capacity needed.

But the service was a resource hog on my 2-year-old computer; it used up all my available CPU resources and made other apps slow to respond. I've had better luck with Skype. Newer computers would probably not have this problem.

Unlike many current video chat products, Gmail Video and Voice uses a proprietary plug-in, not Flash. The small (2MB) download supports Firefox, IE, and Chrome on the PC, and Firefox on the Mac. Support for other browsers and platforms (Linux and mobile) may come later.

Gmail Video and Voice will be made available to all Gmail users starting Tuesday at noon PST. Global rollout should be complete by the end of the day. To see if you have it, open a chat with someone (you don't actually have to message them). If your account is video-enabled, at the lower left of the chat window, there will be an interface element labeled "Video & more." When you click on that it will walk you through installing the plug-in. If you want to make a video call to someone who hasn't yet installed the plug-in, you'll be able to invite them to do so. (In my early test of the service, this feature wasn't yet enabled).

The existing downloadable Google Talk application, which has supported voice chat for a while, only later may get the video capability. The Google people I spoke with were noncommittal.

Upshot: The addition of voice and video makes Gmail a more compelling product. It's very nice to have all the major communications channels (e-mail, chat, voice, video, and soon, SMS) in one place and under one log-on. Google could, though, layer in some more connectivity into its own apps (like YouTube, Google Docs presentations, and Android) to make it even richer. And the lack of an interface to the standard phone system is limiting.

But Google got the first release of its videophone pretty much right. It works, it's easy, and if you're a Gmail user, the service is right where you want it.
